Soojeong Oh 

Biography

​

Acclaimed for her lyrical tone and sensitive interpretation, Korean-Canadian pianist Soojeong Oh fills the hall with her warm demeanor and vibrant stage presence. Deemed as the 2018 recipient of the Frances M. Wentz Turner Prize in Piano, Soojeong attained her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of Toronto with full scholarship. Preceding this, she graduated with her Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy as well as her Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where she held the Artistic Excellence Award Scholarship. Soojeong is also an alumna of the Taylor Academy of the Royal Conservatory of Music where she began her professional musical training as a pianist. Her mentors during her musical training include Dianne Werner, Marietta Orlov, Marian Hahn, and Yong-Hi Moon. 

Throughout her musical career she has immersed herself in numerous performance opportunities as a soloist, showcasing her love for the piano repertoire. Having first started piano lessons at age six, Soojeong started competing locally at ten years old, winning many awards and scholarships from across the GTA. By the age of 12, she was competing at the provincial level and by 18, was performing on stages across the globe. She was awarded her ARCT diploma with first class honours with distinction on her RCM ARCT performer’s examination in 2009 at 14 years old. Soojeong has also performed in numerous masterclasses and worked with renowned artists such as Marc Durand, James Anagnoson, Boris Berman, Jamie Parker, Jane Coop, Nelita True, John Perry, Andre Laplante, Douglas Humphreys, Robert MacDonald, Dang Thai Son, Ronan O’Hora, Julian Martin, and many others.

Aside from Soojeong’s solo piano studies, she has actively served as an accompanist for numerous instrumentalists and choirs in the classical, sacred, and jazz genres. Furthermore, she has frequently worked with many different instrumentalists, enhancing her chamber musicianship through coachings and masterclasses with artists such as Seth Knopp, Min Kwon and the Jupiter Quartet.

While being an accomplished pianist, Soojeong also portrays interest in theatre productions. In 2004, she was casted in her first musical, The Last Empress, performed at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto. She also took part in various music theatre productions performing The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Wonderful Town, and Sugar. Her passion for singing has rewarded her with a 5-year certificate from the Bach Children’s Chorus where she has performed in many concerts throughout Canada and the United States. She has also received an invitation to sing at the KBS Hall in South Korea as a guest soloist and Canadian-Korean representative in 2005.

 

With her passion for performing, she has had the privilege to share her talents in Spain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and South Korea, as well as in numerous concert venues in Canada and the United States.

While pursuing her passion for teaching, Soojeong is currently the pianist for the Toronto Korean Community Choir and serves as a collaborative pianist for the Glen Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music as well as the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.
